WHAT IS TECH PREP?

  1. An educational path that combines a planned sequence of both college preparatory course work with a concentration of technical education.
  2. A program that begins at 9th grade, and continues through graduation. College credit may be available for courses taken while in high school. See your guidance counselor for details. High school Tech Prep programs are designed to fit directly into 4-year colleges and community colleges- leading to a certificate or an associate degree in an applied science degree.
  3. Tech Prep at your community college is an additional path for students to obtain a four year bachelors degree.

WHY TECH PREP?

  1. Today's job market and the workplace of the future is highly competitive, always changing, and demands a labor force possessing advanced technical, academic, and interpersonal skills.
  2. Business and industry demands individuals who have high skills to be competitive in the global workforce.
  3. It prepares students with the basis for a lifetime of learning to meet employer demands, and for career advancement.

HOW DOES TECH PREP WORK?

  1. Provides hands-on practical application to instruction to build skills in math, science, problem solving, critical thinking, oral and written communication, and technical courses needed in tomorrow's work force.
  2. Provides the opportunity to apply what is taught in the classroom so you can see right away how to make what you learn work for you.

WHO CHOOSES TECH PREP?

  1. Students who are comfortable using complex math and science to solve problems.
  2. Students who have an aptitude toward technical and scientific content and enjoy applying hands-on learning of academic knowledge and skills.
  3. Students who intend to pursue careers which may require a community college certificate or applied science degree.
  4. Students who desire challenging, good paying careers in growing occupations.

Tech Prep is funded though the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Actand is a significant innovation in the education reform movement in the United States.

Tech Prep education is an articulated, planned sequence of study beginning in high school, and extending through at least two years of postsecondary education or an apprenticeship program. Programs can continue up to the Baccalaureate degree.

Emphasizing contextual learning and career pathways, Tech Prep is an important school-to-work transition strategy, helping all students make the connection between school and employment.
